Aside from having more resources, a good reason why you can get your own web server and use it instead of a shared hosting plan is the fact that you can install and run a large selection of software. With a shared account, you could use apps, which do not require root access and aren't installed server-side, so when you require particular software for your web sites, you cannot do the installation on a shared web server. This isn't the situation with a hosting server of your own in which you'll be able to install everything you want. The downside is that you may not have much experience and handling your own hosting server is more difficult that managing a shared web hosting account in which the provider manages most things.
